Choosing the right bowl size is not only about diameter.

It is about:

  • Base structure

  • Wall angle

  • Containment level

  • Meal behavior

Within the Artisan Ceramic Tableware collection, bowl forms are selected for daily Mediterranean use — not multiplied into unnecessary industrial variations.

Each piece is hand-formed using traditional Sejnane pottery methods.

Slight variation in diameter and depth may occur.

This guide explains how scale and geometry affect function.

Understanding Diameter vs Usable Space

Diameter is measured at the rim.

But not all of that space is flat eating surface.

Some forms use vertical walls.

Others rise and flare outward.

This means:

  • A 27 cm bowl does not behave like a 27 cm flat plate.

  • Wall height affects volume more than diameter alone.

  • True food surface may be smaller than the full rim measurement.

Understanding this prevents scale confusion.

Geometry

  • Flat base

  • Mostly vertical walls

  • Minimal flare

  • Full diameter largely usable

Best For

  • Yogurt, oats, cereal

  • Grain bowls

  • Couscous

  • Hearty pasta

  • One-bowl meals

  • Small shared use (2–3 people)

Why It Feels Generous

The vertical walls increase volume without increasing footprint.

Food stacks rather than spreads.

This makes Zephyr both:

  • A generous breakfast bowl

  • A primary main-dish bowl

Storka exposes food rather than stacking it.

It encourages circulation across the table.

When to Choose Each

Choose Zephyr when:

  • The dish mixes

  • The meal carries sauce

  • The portion is individual

  • You want warmth retention

Choose Storka when:

  • The dish spreads

  • The table shares

  • Access from multiple hands matters

  • You want visual openness

Capacity & Variation

Because each bowl is hand-shaped:

  • Diameter may vary slightly

  • Depth may differ subtly

  • Wall alignment may not be machine-even

  • Surface tone is unique

These differences do not affect usability.

For detailed explanation, see Handmade Ceramic Variation.

Care & Longevity

These bowls are low-fired earthenware crafted in Sejnane, Tunisia.

They are well suited for daily food use.

Because the clay is traditionally low-fired, a few gentle habits help preserve the surface and structure over time:

  • Hand washing with mild soap is recommended

  • Dishwashers and microwaves are best avoided

  • Sudden temperature changes can stress the material

Full guidance is available in the Ceramic Care Guide.

Choosing the Right Combination

For daily dining:

  • Two Zephyr bowls suit a couple

  • Add Storka for shared sides

  • Pair with Zerka for composed meals

  • Use Hout when hosting

If unsure, begin with a pre-configured Ceramic Dinnerware Set.
