How to gently clean utensil traces from traditional Sejnane earthenware.

Metal marks can appear on ceramic surfaces after repeated use with stainless steel cutlery.

Within the Artisan Ceramic Tableware collection, these traces may be slightly more visible. The ceramics are made from low-fired earthenware with a matte mineral surface, which naturally shows contact marks more easily than highly glazed industrial ceramics.

In most cases, these marks remain superficial.

They do not affect the structure of the piece or its ability to be used daily.

This guide explains how to remove them safely.

Why Metal Marks Appear

Metal marks are not cracks and do not mean the ceramic has been damaged.

They are simply traces left when metal utensils rub against the ceramic surface.

This can occur when:

  • Stainless steel cutlery slides across the surface

  • Pressure concentrates at a small contact point

  • Repeated scraping occurs over time

Because traditional Sejnane pottery has a lightly textured surface, these traces can sometimes appear more visible than on highly glazed industrial ceramics.

This effect is cosmetic rather than structural.

For more background on the material, see Sejnane Pottery.

Safe Cleaning Method

Light metal marks can usually be removed with a gentle cleaning method.

Step-by-step:

  1. Mix a small amount of baking soda with water to form a soft paste.

  2. Apply the paste using a soft cloth.

  3. Rub gently in small circular motions.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

  5. Dry the piece completely before storing.

This method removes most superficial utensil traces without damaging the ceramic surface.

Cleaning Methods to Avoid

Do not use:

  • Abrasive scrubbing pads

  • Steel wool

  • Harsh chemical cleaners

These can scratch or wear the ceramic surface.

For general handling and maintenance guidance, see Ceramic Care Guide.

Preventing Future Marks

Some marking is normal with regular use, but you can reduce visibility by:

  • Avoiding forceful scraping with utensils

  • Using moderate pressure while cutting or serving

  • Washing the pieces soon after meals

Because each piece is handmade, surface tone and texture may vary slightly.

When Marks Remain Visible

If gentle cleaning does not completely remove a trace:

  • The mark may be lightly embedded in the surface texture

  • It remains cosmetic

  • It does not affect food safety or durability

In many cases, marks soften gradually with normal washing over time.

Use with Confidence

These ceramics are designed for daily food service.

Minor surface marks simply reflect regular use and interaction with metal utensils.
